Holes in the Sky

I want real things - live people to take hold of - to see - and talk to - music that makes holes in the sky - I want to love as hard as I can.

"Music that makes holes in the sky... "

A few years ago, this quote from Georgia O'Keeffe got stuck in my head and my heart.

I know what she meant when she wrote those words. She was 29, the year she met her great love, the year she had her first solo gallery show, the year she felt her life starting to take shape. She wanted real things, great things. She wanted life to stretch her and test her and let her soar. I know how she felt.

This project is a tribute to the women who came before us, pioneers ahead of their time. The ones who dared to want real things, to reach into the sky. Their courage is the ground we walk on.

And this is a celebration of women today - my musical friends and colleagues who are creating beauty in the world, artists who are taking risks and moving out ahead of our own time, with the courage that is our legacy -  the courage to reach for real things, to dream as big as we can, and to share this music that makes holes in the sky.

With special guests Simone Dinnerstein, Rhiannon Giddens, Magos Herrera, Leyla McCalla, Alicia Hall Moran, Rachel Barton Pine, Hila Plitmann, Frederica von Stade and others...

Music by Margaret Bonds, Charlotte Bray, Judy Collins, Jennifer Higdon, Billie Holiday, Mary Kouyoumdjian, Abbey Lincoln, Joni Mitchell, Meredith Monk, Paola Prestini, Florence Price, Hazel Scott, and Nina Simone - with world premieres by Julia AdolpheClarice Assad, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Elena Ruehr, Marika Takeuchi, Angelica Negron, and Eve Beglarian.
