All of these things live on in Bernstein's music, and in the work he did, tirelessly and passionately, to share truth and beauty as broadly and deeply as possible. The world of American music, the world of music, the world as I know it, would not be what it is without the vision and mission he set for himself during his lifetime and left for us to continue after he was gone. Thomas Hampson began his career under Bernstein's guidance, learned and performed Bernstein's music under the Maestro's baton, knew LB as a mentor and a friend, and took from him inspiration for his own life in music. I first saw Tom perform when I was a student in Vienna, and I recognized him immediately for what he is: an American original. Like Leonard Bernstein. American music brought us together. Way back when I was putting together my album American Ballads, I happened upon Tom's Song of America project, and I fell in love with a new world of music. American songs, the American vernacular, our history, our story, told in music... And a light went on for me. You could be an artist, a great performer, a scholar, a teacher, an explorer... Like Thomas Hampson. Like Leonard Bernstein. And all these years later, Tom and I are making music together, and it's magic. What he does with A Simple Song began back in the day with LB. I feel so lucky, so blessed, to be here today with Tom. I've known those lyrics (from Bernstein's On the Town) since I was about five years old, thanks to an unconventional childhood involving lots of MGM musicals, and an extremely inappropriate crush on Gene Kelly, who starred in many of same, including the movie version of On the Town. My friends were obsessed with Rob Lowe and I was in love with Gene Kelly - go figure. It's a helluva song, New York, New York. And this sweet, silly tribute by Lukas Foss, written to celebrate LB's 70th birthday, captures everything we love to love about this great big, bustling, exhilarating, exasperating city. Bernstein's example keeps me fighting the good fight, out on the road and the airwaves, taking American music to communities where it matters and where it can create dialogue, understanding, and maybe some healing of divides. Joining me this week is Rhiannon Giddens, another American artist who never hesitates to speak out strongly through her music, and to examine the truths of American culture, no matter how painful and complicated. Among them was Lara’s grandfather, who migrated from Jamaica to Harlem in 1924. Much as Gershwin’s original composition reflected the diverse sonic world of his time, Colón’s buoyant and joyful new arrangement honors the waves of immigration that have continually transformed the sound of American music. Here, Lara’s own lineage enters into Gershwin’s soundscape with the introduction of Caribbean instruments and rhythms. Subsequent arrivals —- from Central and South America, Asia and all the corners of the globe —- are represented in moments of prismatic color that expand Gershwin’s soundscape to reflect the multicultural, kaleidoscopic sounds of America in our own century. This re-imagination of a beloved American masterpiece creates a bridge between the past and the present, the known and the new, the timeless and the timely. Strayhorn was essential to the Duke Ellington Band; it was difficult to discern where Ellington’s style ended and Strayhorn'’s began, and the results of their collaboration brought much joy to the jazz world.
